How to Hear God Speak

How to hear God

Are you really interested in being  able to know when God speaks? The main issue here is being sensitive to the voice of God. How do we get sensitive to the voice of God. He  readily speaks everyday to us all but we don’t know He is. How can you hear God speak to you?

But before we go deep into how we can hear God speak, I think we should first look into those reasons why we don’t hear God speak.

How to Hear God Speak

Why you Don’t Hear God Speak

  • You thought God speaks only to His ministers:

Ministers are not the only ones entitled to hear God speak. No! Every believer does. Most of us got to grow up in the church. We hear our pastor say, “God told me…..”. While I was younger, I so much wondered a man could hear God speak

Jesus said it, when He was talking John 16:13. He wasn’t just referring to ministers, it is for all believers. As long you are saved through Jesus Christ, you are adopted into the family of God. Have you ever seen a Father who doesn’t want to talk to His son or daughter? I have not seen one.

  •  Distractions and being too busy:

It’s possible someone is saying somethings to you and you don’t get to hear them at all. Why? Distraction set in.

We’ve so filled our lives with so many activities that we get too busy for God. Those activities have created so much noise in our hearts that we can’t hear God

  • You don’t study the word of God:

If you don’t study the word of God, getting to know God as a personality is not possible. His words make it possible for you to get tuned to His voice. The more you study His word, He reveals more of Himself to you. By so doing, when God speaks, you don’t get to doubt if it’s Him or not.

The deeper your relationship with people, the more they tend to open up to you. It’s just like mother-daughter or father-son relationship. The son is tuned to his mother or father’s voice even from babyhood. This is birth from the relationship between the duo.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword,it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  • Religious ideas:

So many believers think they can buy God with the activities they engage in, in church without having that a personal relationship with Him. I call that a “scam”. You can’t buy God with your sunday-sunday christianity.

Jesus did not die so we could have religion; He died so we could be one with God through Him, so we could have a deep personal relationship with the triune God: Father, Son and The Holyspirit.

How To Hear God Speak

  • Get connected to God through His Son Jesus Christ:

You can’t get to expressly discuss with someone you don’t know at all. You have to get to meet that person first, know the person and get talking. Get to know God through His Son Jesus Christ.

  • Expect to Hear Him Speak:

Your expectations get you in a ready atmosphere, it provides a conducive environment in your heart to hear God.

John 16:12-13   I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

  • Study the Word of God:

One of the major problems believers encounter is having issues discerning between their mind and the spirit of God.

Studying the word of God makes His voice so distinct. You get tuned to His voice the more you study His words. His voice is in alignment with His words

Hebrew 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  • Listen and obey when He speaks:

The key to hearing more from God through His spirit is obeying Him each and every time.

You can imagine the scenario of a father trying to lead his son aright. If the son decides to go on his own way. His father will not necessarily force him to yield. He will readily get tired talking at some points.

When you grieve the Holyspirit, He doesn’t leave you but He stays silent. You don’t have to fret, probably you’ve not been obeying. He’s right there, sort it out with Him.

When we disobey God, we tend to miss His plans for our lives. Sometimes God tells us not to do things others are doing, we find it not easy to do because we want to join the league.

Remember you are a soldier in training. What does soldiers do? They obey without complain or any form of questioning.

Not obeying may be disastrous, especially if it is at a really dangerous point. You can imagine a solder disregarding instructions at the heat of a war. He/she may get to lose his/her life.

So you just have to depend totally on God, when He speaks, all you need to do is just to trust and obey.

What Ways Can we Hear God Speak To Us

God can speak to us through many ways, God speaks through

  • His audible voice: This is very rare to hear God speak audibly, but it exists. God spoke to Moses audibly in Exodus 3:4-6. God is still in the business of speaking to His people audibly
  • Visions and dreams
  • Angels visitations
  • His still small voice: Some people refers to this as the inner witness.

Romans 8:14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

1 Kings 19:12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

  • Our internal peace: When God speaks, there’s this internal peace that follows if truly the message is from Him.

Romans 8:6b   But the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

  • Our conviction: God speaks through His Holyspirit using our conscience. Our conscience is sensitive, it guides from doing the wrong things. Conscience is given to us by God to sharpen our awareness to sins.

You can  hear God speak to you. God speaks more to us as we readily listen and obey His voice.
