You may agree with me that everything that is being sold in a market is a response to the needs of a certain group of people and we have timepieces being sold. This means that quite a number of people see the need to keep track of time. Of course, I am not ignorant of the fact that some people see timepieces as fashion accessories but the fact remains that many people, attach an importance to time. However, the level of importance we attach to time as individuals varies. The way we see time and spend our time will speak a lot about ourselves and tell of how far we go in life. It is popularly said that time is precious and you may have realized that. Time spent can never be regained. The past will remain in the past and once the present and future becomes the past, they can never be revisited. Therefore, there is a need to know how to manage time wisely.

can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.” – Harvey Mackay.

Why is Time Management Important?

  • Time is limited

Every person has just 24 hours in a day to do whatever needs to be done. Whatever we do with this time will definitely tell in our lives because we are a product of what we do. If we want to be more efficient in all we do and get more good results, we have to learn to manage this limited resource.

  • It will help you to get more work done in less time

A good time manager has a to-do list and a goal. He or she is well-planned and focused. He or she will make sure that everything is done at the right time and thus,
in less time because to accomplish a task and to do it well, you need to be focused. Having a schedule can help you to remain focused. Since being focused increases efficiency, you will do more in less time.

  • You will not waste time on things that do not really matter

A good time manager is focused and will not waste his or her time on irrelevant
things, things that will not make him or her a better person or increase his or her worth. A good time manager focuses on doing the needful at the right time and this
will help the person to have a good life.

  • It can earn you a good reputation

A good time manager will not always get to an event late. A good time manager keeps to a deadline and is often reliable. These qualities can earn you respect and a good reputation.

  • It will help you to avoid burning out

I have discovered that those that do not know how to plan their time well burn out easily because they are too busy. They end up multitasking, getting so tired,
overwhelmed and feeling rushed.. You will be able to avoid stress physically, emotionally and mentally to a great extent if you can manage your time and activities well.

  • You will be able to put your best into whatever you do

You will not have to do everything in a hurry. Your work will be thorough. Less mistakes will be done because proper preparations have been made. There is a plan.

  • It will help you to remain healthy

One of the ways through which time can be managed is to learn to say no. Imagine a person that takes up every responsibility whether it is convenient or not. Such a person will end up getting mentally stressed and might eventually get ill. Being a good time manager will also help to maintain a good health.
In addition, most times as individuals we tend to focus on working alone. Meanwhile,
taking time to rest is not actually a waste of time. Having good time management skills will help to strike a balance between work and rest. There will be time to work
and time to rest. One will not be more than the other.

  • Self-discipline will be developed

A person that is in control of his or her time is self-disciplined. That self-discipline can be applied in every other aspect of life especially where it is much needed.

  • It will help you to be successful

One of the skills that are common to those we regard as being successful is a good time management skill. Have you ever wondered why most of them have secretaries or managers that handle their daily schedules? It is because they have gotten to know
that time is limited and also precious. Therefore, it should not be used anyhow. You see a man that is so mindful of time and makes use of time judiciously? Success is not far from such a person.

 

How to Know you Have not Being Managing your Time Wisely

There are various ways you can know if you have not been using your time well and I
will mention a few of them.

  • You Arrive Late at Every Event: Please note that you are a poor time manager if you never arrive early at an event.
  • People doubt whatever you say always:
    If those around you do not believe you or trust you to abide by your word, keep to
    time or deadlines, you are probably a bad time manager.
  • Your work is never thorough:
    If you make a lot of mistakes in whatever you do because you tend to be in a
    hurry, you are probably a bad time manager.
  • You burn out easily:
    If you get tired easily because you work excessively, you are probably a bad time
    manager.
  • You get little or no result for what you do.
  • You do not prioritize your tasks or you do not stick to your schedule always.
  • You cannot say no to activities that will waste your time or inconvenient you.

  • Know that it is necessary to learn to manage one’s time:

A solution is always sought-after if a problem has been discovered. A man will only do the needful when he realizes the needful needs to be done. Therefore, the first step to
managing time is to know and believe that managing time is necessary.

In addition, believe that time management is possible. Time management is not impossible. It is not unrealistic. It is possible and should be practiced.

  • Know how you spend your time:

Take a few days to know how you spend your time. Take note of what you do each day and the time spent in carrying them out. By so doing,
you will have an idea of what exactly you need to spend less time on.

  • Set Goals:

Having discovered the areas you need to work on, you should set goals that will help you to work on these areas. That is, set goals that will help you to cut down on
how much time you spend on frivolous activities. Set goals that will also help you to improve on your strength. Setting goals will also keep you focused and help you to avoid every form of distraction. Ensure you write those goals down.
Most of those that write down their goals end up achieving them when compared with those that do not write their goals. Therefore, it is important that we take goal writing serious so we can achieve them.
In writing your goals and to-do list, arrange your activities in order of importance. You can make use of deadlines in your goal setting.

If you want to make use of time, you’ve got to know what’s important and then give it all you’ve got”.

  • Set realistic goals:

Make sure you set goals that do not seem impossible to achieve. Do
not choke yourself or inconvenience yourself by setting goals that are beyond your
capability or ability. I have discovered that when we set goals that are beyond our capabilities,  abilities or what is needed at every point in time, we end up doing nothing and hence, end up mismanaging and wasting time.

  • Stop Procrastinating

Procrastination is a thief of time. Anybody that wants to manage time well must learn not to give room for procrastination. Be disciplined enough to say no to every form of
procrastination. Learn to do things as and when due. Be a ball of fire, a go-getter rather than a procrastinator.

  • Give room for relaxation

Add to your set goals and to-do list time to relax and ease yourself of so much tension after a job well done. It is popularly said that all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.
No matter how tight and busy your daily schedule is, find time to rest. It will make you to remain healthy, lowers stress and also make you to be more productive in every task
done.

  • Learn to Say No

If you want to manage your time wisely, you should learn when to say yes and no. It is not every occasion or gathering you attend. You are not meant to grant all requests.
Imagine a lady that is without an exam to write asking a lady that is preparing for an exam to write to accompany her to the cinema to watch a movie. The lady that is
preparing for an exam to write under normal circumstances should be able to say no to
that request if it is not convenient for her and if she is not well prepared for her exams.
In addition, you should learn to say no to frivolous activities and put yourself to check.

  • Seek Progress not Perfection

We set goals and ensure we stick to them, to do them. However, we may not get to do them because of one thing or the other. Plans may change, interests may change.
Therefore, do not be too hard on yourself, seek to have a productive day by using your time wisely.

  • Make effort to do things that will add value to you

No one can manage time effectively unless he first knows what to do with time. To be a good time manager, you have to be visionary. What do you want for yourself? What do you seek for yourself? Who do you see yourself as?
Providing honest answers to these questions will help you to do things that will add value to your life only and not waste time on irrelevancies.
Make use of your time to partake in activities that will increase your worth and make you a better person.

  • Be Mindful of Your Friends

It is so amazing how much our friends affect our lives as individuals. Consciously and
unconsciously, our friends play a huge role in who we are and who we become.
Therefore, it is important that we become so mindful of those we call our friends. If you have friends that have little or no value for their time, I feel you should reconsider the friendship because sooner or later you might become like them which is so dangerous. A person that lives life without a sense of time, lives a nonchalant life. I do not think you want to end up like that.

Charles Darwin said,

A man who dares to waste one hour of life has not discovered the value of life.

I believe these above points will help you to use your time wisely.

time=life; therefore, waste your time and waste your life, or master your time and master your life”.
